Donna Coupland

Professional Counsellor

I am a highly qualified and experienced BACP Senior Accredited Psychodynamic Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I also supervise other counsellors and psychotherapists. I offer both short term and long term counselling and psychotherapy. I have been working as a therapist for over 15 years and have been accredited for 10 years. I am registered with AXA, Aviva, Cigna and Bupa insurance providers. If you’re insured with someone else and would like to see me, get in touch and we can probably sort it out. I offer online therapy which I find suits most people and offers a lot of flexibility if you might find it difficult travelling to sessions, or have a busy schedule. If you’d like to discuss how this would work for you and if it would be suitable, do contact me to discuss this further. Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in person sessions. Most people who try it like it, even if they weren’t too sure! Do get in touch if you have any questions at all, if you would like to discuss whether you would like an initial appointment, or whether counselling or psychotherapy is right for you.

Personal Touch

I believe that talking in a safe space with someone who listens carefully and thoughtfully can be extremely powerful. I experienced this in my own personal therapy.

Client Focus

I work with adults over the age of 18. I am able to work with a wide range of issues, including, but not limited to, anxiety and depression, relationship issues, stress and bereavement.

Background

I have an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy (2012) from Birkbeck College, University of London I also have 3 additional academic degrees, including a PhD. I am widely experienced in voluntary, statutory and educational settings. I currently work in private practice and have done so full-time for 10 years. I have worked as an Associate Tutor on the MA in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Leicester. I have also worked as a Senior Psychotherapist in the NHS. In addition to being a Senior Accredited member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) I am also a registrant of The British Psychoanalytic Council. Within the SCoPEd framework I am in Column C, which reflects my extensive training, knowledge, experience and seniority within my profession. I am also a Submissions Editor for the Routledge journal Psychodynamic Practice.

Therapy Approach

The psychodynamic approach helps you to get to the root of problems, that’s why it’s so effective. I offer a space to help you think about what is going on in your life. Sometimes therapy is about making sense of the past and your feelings about it. Sometimes it's about thinking about what is going on in the present, and how you can move forward. I can help you unblock feelings and think about who you are and where you want to be in your life. Therapy is a two way process, I will be there to listen and help you to get to a better place.

Therapies explained

Psychoanalytic

Psychoanalytic therapy explores the deep-rooted causes of behavior and feelings, uncovering unresolved issues from the past.

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior, with the goals of self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior.
