Professional Counsellor

I am an experienced integrative counsellor  accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy MBACP (Accred).  I am also qualified as Master Practitioner in Eating Disorders and as an EMDR therapist.

I feel passionately about working in collaboration with and empowering clients in the best way possible to move forward in life, supporting you to find resolution to whatever difficulties are troubling you which have brought you to counselling. You may require just a short term number of appointments or long term open ended sessions.

Over the years I have observed how anybody can be affected by traumatic life changing events at any time. Often we do not seek help until reaching a point where we feel so overwhelmed we recognise that something needs to change.

In my experience people who attend for counselling have a wide range of expectations and needs. Counselling can help to build confidence and self esteem, reduce anxiety, find new meanings and understanding of ourselves and our lives, improve communication in relationships; reduce the power of past issues, and help you to feel more in control. You may have a specific problem for which you are seeking help, or you may just have a vague sense of unease that something is troubling you.

I offer face to face appointments during office hours in Wellington, Chard and Exeter as well as offering online appointments to clients anywhere in the UK

Personal Touch

I feel passionately about my role as counsellor and a have real desire to support others through whatever difficulties you might be experiencing, whilst being professional, caring and attentive maintaining confidentiality within the boundaries of the setting.

Client Focus

I work  with adults over the age of 18, addressing a wide range of issues. My focus is on creating a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your feelings and experiences.

In our sessions, we will typically:

  • Learn stategies to overcome challenges related to anxiety, depression, and stress

  • As a trauma informed therapist experienced in working with trauma and PTSD  you will be taught ways to help regulate your emotions and we may use EMDR therapy which is an effective approach when treating the effects of trauma.

  • Together we will endeavour to improve communication and other relationship issues including couples counselling; family relationships; work related issues; separation; bullying and anger.

  • You will feel supported when you are finding your way through grief, loss, and bereavement, (including baby-loss, retirement; relocation, redundancy)

  • I offer an empathetic approach when supporting you to overcome issues around disordered eating/eating disorders (including binge-eating, bulimia) and concerns related to self-esteem and body image

Background

To gain specialist experience I have volunteered as counsellor at SWEDA, a charity supporting clients with eating disorders as well as gaining experience in bereavement counselling by volunteering as counsellor at a Hospice.

I have always been interested in mental health, having previously worked as medical secretary to a consultant psychiatrist and her team.

I am an experienced integrative therapist and EMDR therapist.  This means that I can draw on a wide range of different modalities of counselling according to what is most appropriate for your individual needs.

I am accredited with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy and trained in EMDR with the EMDR Academy

Therapies explained

Behavioural

Behavioural therapy focuses on changing negative behaviors through conditioning techniques.

Brief Therapy

Brief Therapy centers on specific problems and direct intervention, offering solutions within a short period.

EMDR

EMDR is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Existential

Existential therapy focuses on free will, self-determination, and the search for meaning—often centering on you rather than on the symptom.

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic Therapy focuses on individual potential and stresses the importance of growth and self-actualization.

Integrative or Holistic Therapy

Integrative or Holistic Therapy combines practices and theories from various therapeutic approaches to fit the needs of the individual client.

Person-Centered Therapy

Person-Centered Therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions.

Attachment-Based Therapy

Attachment-Based Therapy is focused on building or rebuilding trust and centers on the relationships and bonds between people, particularly lasting psychological connectedness between humans.

Relational

Relational therapy is based on the idea that mutually satisfying relationships with others are necessary for one’s emotional well-being and that problems in these relationships can cause mental health issues.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a goal-directed collaborative approach to psychotherapeutic change that is conducted through direct observation of clients’ responses to a series of precisely constructed questions.
