Julia Miles – Psychotherapist

As a registered, qualified psychodynamic counsellor, my approach is to help you discover and address the root of your problem, and not just deal with the symptoms. I start from the belief that for us all, our present state of mind and behaviour  is influenced by unconscious memories of the past. If together, we explore your history, so you can make sense of your experiences and then think about them, you will be empowered in the future to make choices, rather than to be swept along by feelings which are out of control.

Personal Touch

I think many therapists go into the profession because like anyone else,  they have had to wrestle with life's problems and they are curious to look back over their own lives to see how they have managed.  One thing becomes clear: we all react to experiences in an unconscious patterned and habitual manner, which may or may not succeed.  If it doesn't, then it is useful to find a better way.  That requires self awareness and the confidence to make different choices in future.

Client Focus

I am registered and qualified to work with adult individuals, ie people over 18. I don't specialise, but am always interested in addictions: drugs, alcohol, eating, workaholism, pornography, sports etc.   Stress, anxiety, depression and trauma are common issues and helping with relationship or work difficulties also interests me a lot. I usually see people in my quiet, comfortable office but I am happy to do web work too.

Background

Before qualifying as a therapist I worked as a social worker with families, in hospitals and then as a probation officer.  Working with offenders both in and out of prison, I realised that many were keen to discover why they had got into trouble.  This led me to train as a therapist and to volunteer in two men's prisons.  Later I worked with people addicted to alcohol and drugs.  I started my own private practice in 2010 and have seen a wide range of clients with nearly every conceivable problem.

Therapy Approach

I have a post graduate diploma from Oxford University in psychodynamic studies and I work with that background. This means I aim to get to know the whole client including their childhood experience, what has happened to them growing up and where they feel they belong now. We talk about feelings and if trauma is an issue we look at what the body is telling us. I like to use a mindfulness approach too.

Therapy explained

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on understanding the psychological roots of emotional suffering through self-reflection and self-examination.

Testimonials

Client Feedback

You’ve been a good listener-understanding and responding back the way I feel…

You were always incredibly affirming, which I did not expect from a therapist, but also discerning and perspicuous. I really am most grateful…..

I would like to thank you for your support and care over the last four years. I believe I would not have survived my training without the safe space you provided...

I felt like bringing you flowers today...I couldn't have done what I did two years ago without your help.
