Susan Kernohan – Psychotherapist

she/her

There is no one reason for seeking therapy. For some it is a response to experiencing a life changing event. For others it may be that you feel stuck and unable to move forward. You may be experiencing a range of symptoms including panic attacks, anxiety and depression. Whatever the reason I work with clients who are interested in developing a deeper understanding of themselves, getting to the root of the issue to create long-lasting change. The focus of the work is on moving from the learned coping mechanisms which have allowed you to survive towards healthier choices which will allow you to thrive.

Personal Touch

My business is named after the Greek goddess of the healing process, Aceso. A symbol of hope, she was seen as a catalyst aiding our natural ability to heal. She embodies my way of being as a therapist. I believe the journey, not the destination is at the heart of therapy. I will meet you where you are on your road and walk with you.

Client Focus

I am open to working with anyone who is looking to explore how their past may be influencing their life today. I am particularly interested in experience of childhood trauma, loss and bereavement and addiction - both direct and indirect.

Background

I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor and psychotherapist and a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).  Registration No: 400783.

After 20 years working in HR, partnering senior business leaders, I decided to retrain. I loved working in HR and have achieved many of my career goals however approaching midlife I wanted to use the skills and experience I had gained to support people in a more direct and meaningful way.

Therapy Approach

Psychodynamic therapy uses self-reflection and self-examination along with a focus on the relationship between therapist and client as a way of exploring our way of being in relationships; our patterns of behaviour, thoughts and feelings.

It is not a symptom focus therapy. Instead it focuses on how our past shapes our present and, potentially, our future. Exploring these echoes from the past, allows insights to emerge, helping you to understand why you feel and behave in a certain way and how this might impact your relationships.

The goal of psychodynamic therapy is to develop a deeper understanding, getting to the root of the issues and providing the opportunity to create long-lasting change. It is about moving from the learned coping mechanisms which have allowed you to survive towards healthier choices which will allow you to thrive.
