Plain-English guide

What is an RSS feed?

It sounds technical, but it is simply an automatic list of your latest blog posts.

The simple answer

Think of an RSS feed as a small address that always knows which articles you have published most recently. Give that address to a website, feed reader or automation tool and it can check for new posts automatically.

How it works on Counselling.Network

1
You publish a blog post

Write and publish it once on Counselling.Network.

2
Your feed updates itself

The new title, short introduction and article link are added automatically.

3
A connected service notices

Your website, feed reader or automation tool can display or share the new article.

4
Readers return to the original

They follow the link to read the complete article on Counselling.Network.

Why might I use it?

You can give your personal RSS feed address to:

Your website or web designer

Some websites can use the feed to show your newest articles automatically.

A newsletter service

A connected service can use new feed items when preparing an email newsletter.

An automation tool

Tools such as Zapier can notice a new article and start a workflow.

A feed reader

People using a feed reader can follow new articles without repeatedly checking the website.

What do I need to know?

  • You do not need to understand or edit the technical feed.
  • Drafts and private content are not included.
  • Only a short introduction is supplied; the complete article stays on Counselling.Network.
  • An RSS feed does not post anywhere by itself. It must first be connected to a website or service.
  • RSS can help people discover and link to your work, but it does not guarantee search rankings.

Should I use the widget or RSS?

ChooseWhen it is most useful
Blog widgetYou want a ready-made, styled list of posts to paste onto a website.
RSS feedYour website or automation service already knows how to read an RSS address.

You can use both. The widget is usually the easiest choice; RSS provides more flexibility for designers and automation tools.

Your feed is created for you

Sign in, open Embed Blog Posts and copy your personal RSS feed address. You can then send it to your web designer or paste it into a compatible service.
