Declan Mcguigan – Counsellor Therapist

he/him

Hello, my name is Declan, and I’m a qualified integrative counsellor with a passion for helping people in times of difficulty and distress.

I have worked with individuals experiencing loss, anxiety, depression, challenging relationships and social issues. I strive to create an environment where you feel truly heard and understood whilst establishing a safe and caring professional relationship built upon empathy, trust and mutual respect.

I operate in a predominantly Person-Centred way, whilst drawing from CBT and collaborative Pluralistic practices. This allows us to work in tandem, towards your goals, whilst promoting positive change, introspection and personal growth.

I am someone who has struggled with feelings of low self-esteem, and I have found that effective therapy can often be the first step towards appreciating you for you.

I fundamentally believe that we are all valuable, unique and worthy of celebration. This includes accepting and celebrating ourselves.

Personal Touch

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing basketball, swimming and writing.

Professionally I draw inspiration from influential figures like Carl Rogers and Mick Cooper, whose work has shaped my approach to counselling.

Client Focus

I tend to work best with clients who want to move forward from their presenting issues but cannot see the path. It has been an honour and a privilege to see client's come to the end of counselling with a much clearer sense of themselves, their abilities, their own progress and the direction they are heading in.

Background

Experience

I have worked with clients experiencing a breadth of challenges, including but not limited to trauma, bereavement, addiction, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, abuse, neurodivergence, and eating disorders. In each case I have held the client’s material confidentially and without judgement. I always strive to maintain professional boundaries whilst offering a warm and empathetic service in an effort to affect positive change.

Therapy Approach

The core of my approach is based in creating a therapeutic space where you feel safe, heard, held and understood. I believe it is within this space that positive change can occur.

I work in an integrative way. This means I draw from multiple therapeutic modalities, but particularly the Person-Centred approach. This style of counselling prioritises whatever you wish to bring and follows you on that journey. As goals and aims become clearer, we work together to help you discover how you may achieve them.

Therapies explained

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
