My clients appreciate the informal, friendly approach, always shaped to help them achieve their goals in ways that suit them best. The Human Givens framework that informs my work embodies a thorough scientific but holistic understanding of how to help people make healthy, sustainable changes. I've been a solution-focused psychotherapist/counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist since 2001, combining that with long-established work as a professional storyteller/musician, which goes right back to 1984. I’m the author of several books, chaired the Society for Storytelling in the 'nineties, have run many training courses for professionals and often tell appropriate stories as part of therapy sessions with both adults and children – even in the very extensive and effective work I’ve done with victims of serious trauma, depression and anxiety. Clients work with me to achieve specific goals in ways that can be deeply relaxing and healing. I also aim to avoid prolonging sessions longer than necessary to achieve the improvements clients want to make. And maybe I should add that laughter is definitely not forbidden in my sessions.
I confess that I enjoy talking to people– listening to the stories they tell about themselves and helping them reshape them in positive ways too. It’s sometimes hard to bottle up the secrets I’m told, though I always do. I’ve learned to keep secrets.
My psychotherapeutic work started in 2001 when I qualified in hypnotherapy and solution-focused counselling. I've maintained my private practice in Tonbridge ever since. Along the way, I qualified as a Human Givens therapist in 2005 and also spent 6 years working 2 days a week as a school counsellor in a 'difficult' Medway secondary school. In parallel, I worked weekly with military veterans for around 5 years at what was then RBLI in Aylesford Kent and have done a lot of work with PTSD there and elsewhere. In private practice, I see the full range of concerns, from life-changing difficulties and traumas to challenges such as passing exams and interviews. Among my publications, Transforming Tales (How Stories can Change People) is particularly relevant to my therapeutic approach and is widely used in training courses for therapists across the world.
