Gareth Mason – Psychotherapist

he/him

As a Hastings-based integrative psychotherapist, I offer one to one and couples counselling on both a short- and long-term basis. By ‘integrative’ I mean that I draw upon a mix of the best known modalities depending on the needs of the client.

I have experience dealing with depression, anxiety, marital, family, relationship, illness, cultural and work problems, sexual issues, loneliness, and those seeking greater satisfaction and fulfilment from their lives.

I am most influenced by Person-centred counselling, Existentialism, and also the work of Carl Jung, Attachment and Psychodynamic theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis, and issues related to living in unfamiliar cultures.

While I recognise the value of some diagnoses and the prescribed drugs that complement certain official conditions, my experience has taught me to see each person as a unique individual for whom problems in living has no one textbook treatment. I prefer to work with what a person is and help them to flourish rather than pathologise them for not meeting some constructed idea of being 'normal'.

The most significant common thread through all of the above modalities is the relationship between client and therapist, which I believe is instrumental in the client experiencing positive growth during therapy.

Personal Touch

While I recognise the value of some diagnoses and the prescribed drugs that complement certain official conditions, my experience has taught me to see each person as a unique individual for whom problems in living has no one textbook treatment. I prefer to work with what a person is and help them to flourish rather than pathologise them for not meeting some constructed idea of being 'normal'.

Client Focus

The most significant common thread through all of the above modalities is the relationship between client and therapist, which I believe is instrumental in the client experiencing positive growth during therapy. I'm experienced with working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, which is helped by the years I've spent living and travelling all around the world and many years from my former base in London.

Background

For 12 years, I’ve worked as a UKCP-accredited integrative therapist mainly for the NHS with Anchor Counselling, but also privately. I also graduated as an Supervisor with the Minster Centre, and completed PCE-CfD training with Metanoia. I'm now living in Hastings, East Sussex and see clients either face-to-face in my home or remotely.

Therapies explained

Eclectic

Existential

Existential therapy focuses on free will, self-determination, and the search for meaning—often centering on you rather than on the symptom.

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic Therapy focuses on individual potential and stresses the importance of growth and self-actualization.

Integrative or Holistic Therapy

Integrative or Holistic Therapy combines practices and theories from various therapeutic approaches to fit the needs of the individual client.

Jungian Therapy

Jungian Therapy, or analytical psychology, explores the deeper, unconscious elements of the psyche to help individuals become balanced and whole.

Person-Centered Therapy

Person-Centered Therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions.

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on understanding the psychological roots of emotional suffering through self-reflection and self-examination.

Relational

Relational therapy emphasizes the role of interpersonal relationships as a vehicle for achieving psychological growth and healing.

Transactional Analysis

Transactional Analysis is a form of modern psychology that examines a person’s interactions and communications to identify and improve upon dysfunctional patterns.

Transpersonal

Transpersonal therapy integrates spiritual and transcendent aspects of the human experience with the framework of modern psychology.

Positive Psychology

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive, focusing on well-being, contentment, and fulfillment.

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic Therapy emphasizes looking at the whole individual and stresses concepts of free will, self-efficacy, and self-actualization to help people lead more fulfilling lives.

Person-Centered Therapy

Person-Centered Therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, emphasizes a non-directive, empathetic approach that empowers and motivates the client in the therapeutic process.

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior, with the goals of self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior.

Relational

Relational therapy is based on the idea that mutually satisfying relationships with others are necessary for one’s emotional well-being and that problems in these relationships can cause mental health issues.

Transactional Analysis

Transactional Analysis is a psychoanalytic theory and method of therapy wherein social transactions are analyzed to determine the ego state of the patient as a basis for understanding behavior.

Transpersonal

Transpersonal therapy integrates spiritual and transcendent aspects of the human experience with traditional psychological theories, aiming to support personal growth and self-realization at a deeper level.

Testimonials

Client Feedback

‘I want to thank you for your patience, understanding, advice and above all, good humour! In all my experience of therapy no-one has quite seen “me” or been able to so clearly articulate how the world we live in really is. I feel a calmer, clearer, more balanced individual since “working” with you – though it never felt anything like work. I am hugely grateful and shall miss our sessions. I hope I can continue to keep a sense of perspective and truth in the future as it benefits me much.’
